{"id":205588,"date":"2022-03-04T17:30:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T07:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/?p=205588"},"modified":"2022-03-21T07:14:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-20T21:14:07","slug":"dos-and-donts-of-pet-sitting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/blog\/dos-and-donts-of-pet-sitting\/","title":{"rendered":"Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts of Pet Sitting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>If you have never owned a dog or cat, or even if you do, but have never taken care of another person&#8217;s pet, it can feel daunting. Here are a few do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts to be aware of before you accept your first pet sitting job.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO always have a Meet &amp; Greet <\/strong>with the Pet Owner in person to do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IEpIbBlX7WM\">full property tour<\/a> to share joint legal responsibility that it is escape-proof and hazard-free with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/doc\/meet-and-greet-guide-property-checks.pdf\">Property checklist<\/a> and that pets are compatible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO always sanitise and disinfect your hands or wounds<\/strong> after interacting with pets to prevent catching a zoonosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO take time to ask the Pet Owner about the medical history and the behavioural history<\/strong> <strong>of the pet<\/strong> &#8211; ie. whether it is a rescue, or has a history of aggression, resource guarding, or escapism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO ask whether pets are microchipped, and ensure pets are wearing collars with ID tags<\/strong> and leashes before being dropped off. Also check if they are desexed, and vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO have $10M Public Liability insurance <\/strong>to cover big Vet Bills in the event of an unforeseen Pet Accident. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/become-a-pet-sitter\">join PetCloud as a Pet Sitter<\/a>, PetCloud has a policy in place to cover bookings so you don&#8217;t have to pay for the cost of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO have savlon antiseptic cream and fabric band aids on hand<\/strong> to disinfect pet wounds or hot spots before they get worse. Report it as early as possible to the Pet Owner and take a photo and ask if they would like you to take their pet to the Vet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO always ensure the Pet Owner pays up front via PetCloud before the booking begins.<\/strong> Do not start a booking or accept pets for drop off without payment being confirmed.&nbsp;&nbsp;They could have insufficient funds &amp; it saves you from being ripped off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO call your nearest Emergency Vet as your first course of action<\/strong> if there is a medical emergency (and then report it to PetCloud).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO always give daily photo updates <\/strong>&amp; report changes in stool or behaviour to the Pet Owner<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO always keep Cats and Kittens securely locked indoors<\/strong> (with good air flow) 100% at all times &amp; never allowed to roam outside &#8211; even if requested by the Pet Owner. A kitty litter tray must be provided indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO only ever walk a maximum of 3 dogs<\/strong>, and take on an appropriate size and temperament of dogs according to your strength<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO feed each dog at separate ends of the yard<\/strong> or house to avoid fights breaking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO always pick up after guest dogs poop <\/strong>and never walk a female dog on heat. It\u2019s illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO charge up your phone and ensure you are always contactable <\/strong>and responsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO use your smartphone as your liability safeguard<\/strong> to film or photograph or make notes or get permission in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO realise your time is valuable<\/strong>, particularly to someone who has none, by not discounting your prices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO keep a diary. <\/strong>Being organised and reliable is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DO request the Owner provides their pet&#8217;s food<\/strong> and bedding to avoid stomach upsets and diarrhea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON\u2019T spray poison insect spray (such as Mortein)<\/strong> around your home to get rid of insects or fleas. Only use a pet-friendly pesticide, because pets can absorb poison through their paws and die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON&#8217;T give guest pets extra treats or special foods<\/strong> against the owner\u2019s instructions, even if you want to pamper them a little. The animal could have a strict diet or may be allergic or sensitive to food changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON\u2019T take pets anywhere that has not been discussed<\/strong> and approved with the Owner in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON\u2019T ever accept bookings for cats while you are pregnant<\/strong> due to the risk of toxoplasmosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON\u2019T ever leave pets in the car, or tied up outside a shop<\/strong>. Pets can die in hot cars in minutes and can get stolen out the front of shops. Leave them at home if you have to visit the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DON\u2019T ever let a dog off leash in a public area<\/strong>. It\u2019s against the law.
