If you create a strong connection with your emotional support animal, they can be more effective in relieving the symptoms of your disability instead of having the opposite effect (like stressing you out if they bark too much).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-246825\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament.png 800w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament-590x393.png 590w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament-577x384.png 577w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/right-temperament-600x400.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>The long haired Chihuahua is very portable because of its small size.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Positive Reinforcement Obedience Training is Key<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it doesn\u2019t &#8216;certify&#8217; Emotional Support Dogs, booking a Positive Reinforcement Obedience Trainer is often a prerequisite required by therapy dog organisations if you also want to go down that path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do Emotional Support Dogs need to be registered?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No.  There is no legal requirement for emotional support dogs to be registered in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can I take my Emotional Support Animal to shopping centres and on plane trips?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No. Emotional Support Animals are not the same as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/blog\/recovery-support-for-ndis-pet-loving-participants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Service Dogs<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/blog\/recovery-support-for-ndis-pet-loving-participants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assistance Animals<\/a> and do not share the same rights and protections under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only way to give your pet legal rights is by having it certified as an Assistance Dog. Airlines are not required to accommodate emotional support animals, and nor are shopping centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are looking for a dog that offers handlers legislative protection from discrimination, then you might be looking for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/blog\/recovery-support-for-ndis-pet-loving-participants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psychiatric Assistance Dog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can my Emotional Support Animal be included in the goals in my NDIS Plan?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes in a broad sense.  If your goals are to have your confidence and communication skills  improved, and to increase your self-sufficiency and independence, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/ndis-pet-care\">Animal Assisted Community Mentoring<\/a> using your pet is an activity that that may be right for you to achieve those goals. You can include your own dog when you go on outings with Support Workers from PetCloud. Your dog does not have to be a therapy dog.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I get a letter of Support to have an Emotional Support Animal?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any registered mental health therapist or medical health professional can write ESA letters and state the pet is part of your therapy treatment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral.png\" alt=\"a doctor writing a letter of support for an ESA\" class=\"wp-image-246823\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral.png 800w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral-590x393.png 590w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral-577x384.png 577w, https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/a-doctor-writing-a-referral-600x400.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should an ESA Letter contain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your Doctor, Mental Health Clinic, or Hospital\u2019s letterhead and signature, as well as the date of issuance<\/li><li>Mental health professional\u2019s licence type, the date the licence was issued, licence number, and the state that issued the licence<\/li><li>A supporting statement that an Emotional Support Animal is a vital part of your life<\/li><li>\u201cPrescription\u201d (although not technically a prescription, it is sometimes referred to as an ESA prescription)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Details about your pet (type, breed, name, etc.) may be included (but not required)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get an ESA Letter in four steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Locate a registered clinical therapist or registered doctor in your State that is familiar with Emotional Support Animals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Book an Appointment in-person or online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Discuss your mental health and whether an Emotional Support Animal could help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.
