It\u2019s a scenario many dog owners are all too used to and Justin Jordan from Jordan Dog Training said there are many reasons why a dog may dig holes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dog may be bored, anxious, or digging purely from habit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome dogs even dig to find beetles and insects in the ground or because they are stimulated by fertilizer used in the garden.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Not to do when dealing with a Canine Excavator<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whatever the reason Jordan shares with us the two common mistakes many dog owners make when dealing with digging.<\/p>\n

FILLING HOLES WHILE THE DOG IS WATCHING<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One common mistake people make when repairing holes is to\u00a0fill them back in while the dog is watching.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dogs learn from our behaviour and when they see you moving soil around in the yard they may mimic that behaviour with more digging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This also means that gardening can be a potentially damaging activity; make sure that your dog is out of sight when planting new plants or weeding.<\/p>\n

Dogs don\u2019t understand your behaviour, and are likely to think that you are playing in the garden (and may be inclined to come back and \u2018help\u2019 you with the gardening the next day.)<\/p>\n

REPRIMANDING YOUR DOG <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another common mistake is to\u00a0reprimand the dog after the event by pointing to the hole or dragging the dog to the hole.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dogs cannot reason or rationalise, so while your dog understands that you\u2019re cranky, it does not understand why.<\/p>\n

This can lead to added stress for the dog, and unfortunately one of the displacement activities brought about by stress is digging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The thing to remember when reprimanding your dog is that scolding is only useful if you catch them in the act.<\/p>\n

HOW TO PREVENT DIGGING<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

COMMON REMEDIES<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jordan recommends some common remedies for digging dogs for how to discourage their bad habit.<\/p>\n

\u201cA common remedy for digging dogs is to fill the hole with some of its faeces under the top layer of soil and if the dog goes to dig in that same spot again it may be discouraged from that area,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can also give the repaired hole a light spray of citronella or eucalyptus oil\u2026 products such as \u2018Get Off My Garden\u2019 are great for providing a scent-based deterrent.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways remember to make sure your dog is out of sight whilst you are making the necessary repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Petbarn\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A BORED DIGGER<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are concerned your pooch is digging out of boredom, Jordan recommends some extra mental<\/a> and physical stimulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the bored digger, more exercise (e.g. jogging, swimming, off-leash play at the park), stimulation (e.g. brain games, exploring new places), and environmental enrichment (e.g. treat dispensing toys or scatter feeding) may help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to keep your dog happy and mentally drained, there is no substitute for daily exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n

FERTILISERS: THEY SMELL SO BAD IT\u2019S GOOD<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Jordan said some fertilisers that smell good to dogs can encourage dogs to dig.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough natural fertilisers such as Dynamic Lifter and Blood & Bone are an environmentally friendly option, unfortunately dogs love the smell and \u2013 in some cases \u2013 the taste of these products,\u201d he said\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHead down to your local garden centre and have a chat with the staff about some dog-friendly alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

STRESS DIGGING<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There is also the possibility your fur babies digging obsession may be a little more in-depth and Jordan says this may require more in-depth investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the dogs that are digging out of stress, this is a rather in-depth psychological issue that will often require the help of a behavioural trainer or vet to investigate and treat the underlying reasons for the dog\u2019s anxiety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

HOW TO MANAGE THEIR DIGGING HABIT<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately some dogs are just prone to dig regardless of what we do to prevent it.<\/p>\n

Jordan says if \u2013 after trying the above remedies \u2013 your dog is still a persistent digger, consider finding a part of the yard or garden that is not precious to you.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake your dog to this area and scatter liver treats that have been broken up into tiny pieces on the ground,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis may encourage your pup to hunt, sniff and dig in this area, giving them a job to do and keeping them busy for a period of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, this is more rewarding than digging up its own faeces in other areas of the garden and as we all know, a tired dog is a happy dog.\u201d<\/p>\n
