{"id":181372,"date":"2017-11-28T13:09:58","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T03:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/how-to-keep-dogs-safe-from-bloat-gdv\/"},"modified":"2025-01-19T15:14:59","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T05:14:59","slug":"how-to-keep-dogs-safe-from-bloat-gdv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/blog\/how-to-keep-dogs-safe-from-bloat-gdv\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Keep Dogs Safe From Bloat (GDV)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"font-style: italic;\">BE SAFE &#8211; DON&#8217;T WAIT!\u00a0As a dog owner or carer it is important understand Bloat (GDV) as it is a life-threatening condition and veterinary emergency.<\/h3>\n<p>Bloat involved the stomach twisting, which creates and obstruction to major blood vessels and limits the heart\u2019s ability to pump blood which in turn damages vital organs.<\/p>\n<p>We discuss everything you need to know about Bloat with Justin Jordan from Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/dog-training\">Dog Training<\/a> who says any symptoms should not be taken lightly with a \u2018wait and see approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer it takes to see a vet, the less likely it is that your dog will survive\u2026 [and] death can be the result in just a few hours without appropriate treatment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBloat is more common to occur in large, deep-chested dogs such as the Weimaraner, Great Dane, Vizsla, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/blog\/Puppy-Profile-German-Shepherd\">German Shepherd<\/a>, Rottweiler, Doberman and Mastiff breeds but can also happen to any breed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a case recently where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/blog\/puppy-profile-dachshunds\">dachshund<\/a> unfortunately lost its life due to bloat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"text-align: center;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/search\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 600px; height: 165px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/08\/blog_image-1502171510.png\" alt=\"Find a sitter, find a pet sitter, find a dog walker, loving pet sitter\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With approximately 30 per cent mortality rate, this is a condition where prevention is better than cure and Jordan shares his tips to reduce the likelihood of your dog suffering from this condition.<br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #fe4164;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">HOW TO PREVENT BLOAT<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jordan&#8217;s Tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bloat is more likely to occur if the dog is eating large meals too soon before or after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/dog-walking\">exercise<\/a>. The common rule is no exercise for 30 minutes to 1 hour either side of meals, especially for those breeds that fall into the danger category.<\/li>\n<li>It has also been shown that breaking the dog\u2019s diet up so they have two smaller meals per day rather than one large meal can help to reduce the incidence of bloat.<\/li>\n<li>Slow down the rate at which your dog eats. If they tend to inhale their meals, try swapping out their food bowl for a Go- Slow bowl or a Green Feeder, or sprinkle their food on the patio or lawn so that your dog has to forage for their meal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 300px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/12\/blog_image-1513224437.jpg\" alt=\"Bloat, How to keep dogs safe from bloat, what is bloat (GDV), pet care, Petcloud, Pet sitting, dog sitting, dog boarding, vet\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">Source: DefendPitbulls.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The RSPCA agrees precautions such as moderating meal sizes and exercise around meals should be taken to avoid Bloat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdult dogs should be fed at least twice a day to help avoid bloat which can be fatal,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, dogs should not be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/dog-walking\">exercised<\/a> immediately before or after eating, to avoid bloat, particularly deep-chested dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=eL5CCBGK0BU&amp;offerid=502078.11&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ad.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/show?id=eL5CCBGK0BU&amp;bids=502078.11&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4&amp;gridnum=13\" alt=\"Petbarn\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><strong>SYMPTOMS A DOG HAS BLOAT<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you notice your dog or a dog in your care is displaying these symptoms of Bloat seek immediate veterinary attention.
