We explore why they do it and how to prevent the gross fetish.<br \/>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>The technical term for dogs eating poop is coprophagia, and yes it is disgusting but what can it mean for your puppy\u2019s health?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0<strong>WHY DO DOGS EAT POOP?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dogs eating poop is a normal behaviour for dogs, however the reasons for said behaviour can be varied based on their age, training, living conditions and their diet.<\/p>\n<p>This behaviour has a long history with some experts assert this behaviour is the root of domestication.<\/p>\n<p>Wild canids would eat human refuse outside of settlements, and over time these animals came to resemble our domestic dogs more and more.<\/p>\n<p>Before being domesticated dogs were scavengers and dogs commonly fed on the waste of other animals.<\/p>\n<p>As well as liking poop, a dogs digestive systems are designed in such a way that they can gain nutrition from the waste products of other animals.<\/p>\n<p>Poop eating may just be a remnant of dog history, however here are some other common reasons for dogs eating poop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"text-align: center;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 600px; height: 165px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/08\/blog_image-1503545828.png\" alt=\"Find a pet sitter, dog walking, doggy day care, why do dogs eat poop, why does my dog eat poop, physical stimulation, mental stimulation, pet minding, dog boarding, dog minding\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"components-resizable-box__container\">\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #fe4164;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>COMMON REASONS WHY DOGS EAT POOP<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pecking order<\/strong>: In a household with multiple dogs submissive dogs sometimes eat the stool of their dominant counterparts<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dogs pick up things quickly<\/strong>: If they see other dogs eating poop your dog may learn the behaviour from them<\/li>\n<li><strong>Housebreaking accidents<\/strong>: If dogs have been heavily punished for housebreaking accidents they may \u201cdispose of the evidence\u201d the next time<\/li>\n<li><strong>For puppies it may be a learning experience<\/strong>: Puppies learn but putting things in their mouth but most will develop a distaste for poop fairly quickly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Health issues<\/strong>: Your dog may not be absorbing enough nutrients, have parasites or issues with their pancreas and it is best to have them are examined by a veterinarian.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prefer poop to dog food<\/strong>: some veterinary nutritionists suggested dogs eat stool to replenish enzymes, certain nutrients (particularly vitamin B) or being overfeed and want to \u201crecycle\u201d their nutrient rich waste.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feeling neglected<\/strong>: For an attention seeking pet, negative attention is still attention, dogs that are bored or lonely may also play with and eat stool or if their living conditions are unclean they may resort their own \u201chousekeeping\u201d efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All that being said, coprophagia is not a behaviour many of us want in our companion dog \u2013 especially if they like to give us big licks!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=eL5CCBGK0BU&amp;offerid=502078.11&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ad.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/show?id=eL5CCBGK0BU&amp;bids=502078.11&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4&amp;gridnum=13\" alt=\"Petbarn\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG FROM EATING POOP?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Practice makes perfect and it\u2019s the same with dogs. The more they practice eating poop, the better your dog will get at this behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>If your dog eats poop and you want them to stop carefully management and preventing them from \u201cpracticing\u201d that poop-eating behaviour is extremely important.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #fe4164;\">TIPS TO MANAGE THIS BEHAVIOUR<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thoroughly clean your yard and pick up each new pile as soon as it happens. Don\u2019t give them the opportunity to wonder how that fresh, enticing piece of poop tastes.<\/li>\n<li>If you have\u00a0other pets living with your dog, clean up after them right away also \u2013 especially litter boxes \u2013 to keep temptation at bay<\/li>\n<li>Keep your dog mentally and physically engaged. Regular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/doggy-day-care\">play time<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/dog-walking\">dog walking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/dog-training\">agility training<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/blog\/how-long-can-you-leave-your-dog-alone\">enrichment<\/a> to keep them entertained<\/li>\n<li>Check their diet and make sure they are eating raw, whole and varied diet of quality proteins.
