They will accept children if treated with care and respect. Happiest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/doggy-day-care\">living indoors<\/a> with the family with access to a large, fenced yard to burn off energy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personality:<\/strong>\u00a0An active, capable and intelligent dog who must be kept busy learning, playing and working both physically and mentally. Devotion and courage are unmatched and are amazingly versatile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperament:\u00a0<\/strong>Highly intelligent, requires a lot of attention but will return one hundred fold with loyalty ad incorruptible guarding skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trainability:<\/strong>\u00a0Highly responsive to training and eager to learn, especially to voice commands given with the appropriate intonation. Without it, they will express their boredom or frustration by barking or chewing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:\u00a0<\/strong>A highly active dog will need more than a couch potato. As a guide, place your hands on him, thumbs along the spine and fingers going down the sides and their ribs are undetectable, cut back. If they look too thin and you can see the ribs they\u2019re too thin, so add a little more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Average Life Span:\u00a0<\/strong>10\u00a0\u2013 14\u00a0years<\/li>\n<li><strong>Special Considerations:\u00a0<\/strong>Can be prone to hip dysplasia.\u00a0Young pup should be exercised with some discretion to avoid long-term damage to still soft and forming joints. As the dog ages,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/blog\/how-long-can-you-leave-your-dog-alone\">Enrichment toys and activities<\/a>, plus regular exercise are recommended, as well as a dog sitter, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/doggy-day-care\">doggy day care<\/a>\u00a0or dog\u00a0walker if you\u2019re away for longer periods of time.<\/li>\n<li>To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill or pet store. It was not until after\u00a0the First World War in 1977 when the breed&#8217;s name was changed back to &#8220;German Shepherd&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>Advice about Owning a German Shepherd Dog &#8211; from the Owner of one.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 300px; height: 251px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/10\/blog_image-1507596758.png\" alt=\"German Shepherd, PetCloud, Dimi, Breed of the month, \" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meet Se Min and her dog Dimi.\u00a0 Se Min is a Pet Owner on PetCloud who lives in Rochedale, Queensland shares how watching Inspector Rex when she was a kid led her to fall in love with German Shepherds.\u00a0\u00a0Se Min says her favourite things about German Shepherd their intelligence, but it can be a double edged sword, \u201cThey are so smart, protective and their alertness is amazing. [They are] so aware of their surroundings, other people, dogs and\u2026their owner. Dimi used to chew through underwear\u2026 and once she chewed my $160 shoe but she was so cute!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Training and exercise has been a challenge, Se Min explains, \u201cBecause she is so intelligent I always wonder if I\u2019m teaching her the right things to complement her ability to learn, and also if what I teaching her is intellectually stimulating enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dimi has had some health issues and Se Min says it\u2019s been heartbreaking, \u201cDimi has both [hip and elbow dysplasia] as well as joint arthritis since she was 6-7months and often gets inflamed joints. It\u2019s a really hard thing to see you pet go through that.
