Unfortunately, this isn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>WHEN ARE TICKS\u00a0ACTIVE?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tick are the most\u00a0active\u00a0from August through to February\/March. The paralysis tick (or Ixodes holocyclus if you want to get scientific) is less active during winter, but not dormant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ticks like moist, warm environments and have a life cycle that can mean they are out and about at all times of the year.<\/p>\n<p>This means that regardless of the season, after periods of rain and\/or slightly warmer weather your pet (and you) may have picked up a few hangers-on.<\/p>\n<p>Ticks can\u2019t jump, they climb or fall from plants to an animal or person and once on board they can crawl so even if you own the tallest of tall Great Danes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-p1\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; text-align: center;\"><strong style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; text-align: center;\"><span class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/search\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 600px; height: 165px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/07\/blog_image-1499310397.png\" alt=\"pet sitter, pet minders, sitter who adore your pet, petcloud, french bulldog, become a pet sitter, dog lover\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong><span class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-s1\">WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A TICK BITE?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lameness in the legs, weakness, or appearing wobbly.<\/li>\n<li>Heavy or fast breathing, grunting noises and\/or abdominal heaving<\/li>\n<li>Change or loss of bark<\/li>\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n<li>Gagging and vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li>Inability to blink in one or both eyes<\/li>\n<li>Appearing generally unwell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-p1\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;\"><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong><span class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-s1\">WHERE TO CHECK\u00a0YOUR PET FOR TICKS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to check everywhere because you never know where those ticks might have ended up.<\/p>\n<p>As a general rule ticks prefer the head and warm, protected parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p>This means that ears, in between toes, and underneath shoulder and hip joints are particular spots to pay close attention to.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important not to forget around the eyes, mouth and under the tail, while it might not seem like ticks would end up in such places, they can and do take up residence there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 600px; height: 387px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/08\/blog_image-1502250306.png\" alt=\"check for ticks, how to find ticks, dog hot spots for ticks, where do ticks hide, petcloud, detecting ticks, paralysis\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-p1\"><span style=\"color: #52c4be;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong><span class=\"im\" style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-s1\"><span class=\"m_8946414376488084054gmail-Apple-converted-space\">HOW TO\u00a0REMOVE AN UNWANTED GUEST<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of information out there on the best way to remove ticks, but it gets even more confusing if you find yourself reading about tick removal in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is the only place in the world that has the paralysis tick so international methods for dealing with other types of ticks can be quite different to paralysis tick recommendations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The best way to find out how to remove ticks safely from your fur baby is to ask your vet. They can also tell you about preventative methods that might be available to you.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you have to remove ticks at home and don\u2019t have access to your vet?<\/p>\n<p>Do you go with tweezers and a sharp twisting motion or the tick twister or something else entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Veterinary Nurse Diana Batson of the Woombye Veterinary Surgery says current recommendations are based around aggravating the tick as little as possible during removal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemove the tick directly with a tick twister &#8211; rotate and pull and off comes the head and everything. Anything that aggravates the tick will cause it to release more poison so you want to make sure of the least aggravation before they die,\u201d Batson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"height: 200px; width: 647px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2017\/08\/blog_image-1502251217.jpg\" alt=\"Tick twister, how to remove ticks safely, petcloud\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have a tick twister handy the RSPCA recommendation involves using just a simple pair of tweezers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recommended method for removing ticks from dogs involves grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible with tweezers and pulling it out.
