{"id":181255,"date":"2017-06-20T10:03:47","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T00:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/how-to-walk-dogs-responsibly\/"},"modified":"2025-01-19T15:16:14","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T05:16:14","slug":"how-to-walk-dogs-responsibly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/d\/blog\/how-to-walk-dogs-responsibly\/","title":{"rendered":"Am I Walking Dogs Responsibly?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dog bites happen to everyday people and pets, but can often be avoided by owners and pet sitters using the correct lead, collar and walking technique.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/dog-walking\">walking your dog<\/a> it is important to ensure your dog is on the correct lead to ensure you, your dog and other community members are safe and comfortable.&nbsp;&nbsp;The RSPCA recommends teaching your dog to walk on a lead but \u2018loose lead walking\u2019 and operates on the basic principles of reward-based training.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cEssentially, if a dog is walking on a lead without pulling, the owner can keep walking and reward the dog for that desired behaviour,\u201d the RSPCA said.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cHowever if the dog starts to pull, the owner should stop and stand still like a tree. By stopping, the dog is not rewarded for pulling and the dog learns that when they pull they won\u2019t go forward.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=eL5CCBGK0BU&amp;offerid=502078.11&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ad.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/show?id=eL5CCBGK0BU&amp;bids=502078.11&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4&amp;gridnum=13\" alt=\"Petbarn\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should I check to make sure your walking equipment is in order?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collars should be suitable and comfortable for your dog. Thick leads with large clips are often too weighty for small dogs and can put undue pressure on the neck and spine.
