As a dog breathes in, air travels through their nasal passage and is cooled before it reaches the lungs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">When temperatures become warmer and more humid, dogs have\u00a0a harder time cooling down. Your dog\u2019s heart and lungs work harder as your dog breathes in and out quicker to reduce their body temperature. Short-snouted (<span style=\", helvetica, arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;\">Brachycephalic breeds)\u00a0<\/span>dogs, have a harder time cooling down because of their shorter nasal passages. For example, pugs, french bulldogs and even caviliers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 500px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2020\/11\/blog_image-1606452462.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Here are a few safety tips when taking your dog out in warm weather:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #fe4164;\"><strong>1. Stay off Hot Pavement and Roads (Bitumen)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">One major thing that many dog owners overlook when it&#8217;s sunny out is their dog&#8217;s feet. Paw pads can be easily burned by hot pavement. Summer heat warms pavements just like a frying pan and if the pavement gets too hot it can burn your dog\u2019s paws. Sand can also get very hot, so use the hand technique to check sandy surfaces too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Press the back of your hand against the asphalt or concrete for 5\u00a0seconds to verify if it will be comfortable for your dog to walk on. If it\u2019s too hot for your hand, it\u2019s too hot for your dog\u2019s paws. \u00a0Avoid these surfaces during the day or consider putting protective booties or paw\u00a0wax\u00a0on your dog\u2019s paws as added protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 400px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.petcloud.com.au\/uploads\/blog\/2020\/11\/blog_image-1606435623.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #fe4164;\"><strong>2. Prevent sunburn &#8211; Walk or sit\u00a0in the shade when outside. Provide shade when home.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Tops of the ears, bridge of the nose, around the eyes and abdomen are all sensitive areas on a dog&#8217;s skin. These areas have thinner skin and are more exposed. So, if you plan to be out in hot sun for a while, consider purchasing a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sun protector or high factor waterproof sunscreen<\/span> specifically made for dogs.\u00a0 Provide them shade when at the beach and at home. Comb and blow out shedding dogs and clip long-haired dogs.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Most dogs shed their coats at the beginning of summer, so daily grooming will help to remove the unwanted hair and will make your dog more comfortable. For <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petcloud.com.au\/blog\/how-to-care-for-a-dog-with-a-double-coat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">double coated<\/a><\/strong> dogs &#8211; never shave them. Groomers will usually use a detangler shampoo to help remove shed hair, and will use a hair dryer to blow out shed hair, and will use a pin or slicker brush and use an undercoat comb and will part your dog&#8217;s fur in sections as they groom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">For long-haired dogs, clipping their coat may also help with keeping them cooler in the summer months. Avoid water with blue-green algae and\u00a0rivermouths\u00a0where bull sharks like to be<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Unfortunately, a growing number of ponds, lakes and rivers have blooms of blue-green algae during warmer months. It&#8217;s important to always\u00a0check waterways for unusual algae blooms and be alert to local advisories and warning signs around waterways. Never exercise pets during the heat of the day.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Dogs can be affected by\u00a0heat stroke very quickly in warm and humid weather because the only way dogs releases heat is by panting and sweating through the foot pads and nose. Prevention is key. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to take your dog for a walk in summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><strong>If you notice any of these signs in your dog or someone else&#8217;s, they may be suffering heat stroke:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li>Vigorous panting<\/li>\n \t<li>Dark red gums<\/li>\n \t<li>Dry gums<\/li>\n \t<li>Bloody vomiting or diarrhea<\/li>\n \t<li>Lying down and unwilling or can\u2019t get up<\/li>\n \t<li>Staggering gait<\/li>\n \t<li>Collapse and\/or loss of consciousness<\/li>\n \t<li>Thick saliva<\/li>\n \t<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"color: #fe4164;\"><strong>If a dog is suffering heat stroke:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">1. Move the dog out of the heat<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">2. Cool them off with a shower or tap water or place cool wet rags on their footpads and head. Do NOT use ice cold water &#8211; this can actually harm the dog further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">3. Offer the dog water but don\u2019t force him\/her to drink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">4. Call or visit the vet right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 1em 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Note: Certain types of dogs are more sensitive to heat especially elderly dogs, overweight dogs and brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, like Pugs, Bulldogs, French bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Cavoodles, Boxers and even Staffies.
