Registering your Pet with Council

Registering your Pet with Council

At what age does my pet need to be Registered with Council?

All dogs and cats over three months old or within 14 days of adopting them to live with you are required to be registered with Local Council by law under the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 if they live within that Council’s local government area.

How do I register my pet with Council?

Check your local council’s website & pay the fees online. Tip: Some fees may be discounted by some Councils if you de-sex your pet. Each Council differs. Some have once off registration fees, and some have annual registration fees.

Why should I register my pet with the local council?

Registering your Pet with your local Council is important. In the event that they happen to escape, your local Council will be able to swiftly identify and reunite them with you. Council registration fees go towards wages for Council Staff running a Lost & Found service, money to create and maintain dog parks with secure gates, drinking taps, and rubbish bins, poop bags, and also Council’s participation in local pet markets with microchipping & discounted parasite treatment, wages for Council Staff to investigate and resolve complaints about dog attacks, barking dog noise complaints, patrols of parks, beaches and streets and picking up wandering pets to impound them or reunite them with Pet Owners. Registering your Pet with your local Council helps all Pet Owners in your community.
