What is a Golden Retriever?

Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve shot waterfowl (ducks, geese and upland game birds). The name “retriever” comes from their ability and desire to procure fallen game and bring it back to their owners/hunters. They naturally love to swim, they’re easy to train and very obedient.  Golden Retrievers make wonderful companions, hunting dogs, service dogs and search and rescue dogs. You won’t regret having this pup in your household!

What do Golden Retrievers look like?

Like their name suggests, Golden Retrievers have a natural golden/yellow fur. These colours vary from light to dark. Their undercoat helps keep them cool in the summertime and warm in the winter. Males weigh roughly 29-34kg while females 25-29kg.

There are three subsets of retrievers are British Golden Retrievers, which tend to be more muscular, American Golden Retrievers, which have darker coats and finally, the Canadian Golden Retrievers, which has a thinner coat and stands taller compared to the others.

What makes Golden Retrievers special?

What sets Goldens apart from other dogs is they’re versatile. They’re known as bird dogs, family pets, service dogs and search and rescue. On top of all this, they do it with a smile! They’re the definition of loyal and make the best companions.

How often do I need to groom my Golden Retriever?

Because Goldens have longer coats and shed consistently, brushing them weekly will help maintain their fur. Bathing with shampoo shouldn’t be done too regularly as it can damage their undercoats. If your Golden Retriever happens to run through some dirt or mud, gently hose them down. Make sure to take your dog to a professional to trim their nails once a month so their paws don’t splay!

How often should I walk my Golden Retriever?

Golden Retrievers are a very active breed with a good amount of energy. They need about 60 minutes of exercise daily! You can break it up into two 20 minute sessions. You can also play with them in your yard or house to keep them busy.

How do I train my Golden Retriever?

Golden Retrievers are receptive to fun games! You can make your training sessions fun by using a light tone of voice and using treats. They respond well to praise and positive reinforcement. Pet Cloud offers dog training classes where a trainer comes to your home and works with your dog over the span of 6 weeks! Check out the link for more information.
